This Workshop will introduce you to Pysanka, the intricate egg-decorating craft of creating your protective charm

The Art of Pysanka

Pysanka derives from the word "pysaty" which means "to write". Each curl, star or zigzag on the Pysanka carries a special meaning. This art goes beyond decoration; it is a heartfelt ritual of manifesting goodwill toward your loved ones and honoring Mother Nature.

Pysanka was once under a threat of extinction and not every household practices it in Ukraine. However, it's a sacred ritual, and those few pysanka artists are very proud of their art. They still remember and cherish the beliefs and legends associated with them.

In this workshop, you will get a chance not only to design your own Pysankas but also learn about the profound symbolism of the Ukrainian Easter egg.

Take a breath

Drawing patterns with bees wax is an unusual experience. The tool called Pysachok (or Kistka) will be your ally in this fascinating process.
Trust yourself

With every layer of colorful dye and wax patterns your Pysanka will build your special message. The final step: melting away the wax - the moment of revelation - is truly magical.

Meet the tutor

Natalie’s love for pysanky began in 2007 in Ukraine, and after moving abroad, she discovered that people from various cultures were captivated by this beautiful Ukrainian tradition.
Now in Vienna, Natalie is thrilled to share her passion with you in one of these captivating Easter workshops.

Q: Where and when will the master class take place?

A: The next masterclass will be on 22nd March and 28 March 2026, 14:00 - 17:00

Q: Can I come at any time?

A: The workshop starts with an introduction about the art and methods of pysanka - which is an important part of the experience. Please plan to stay for 3 hours to have enough time to design 3 eggs.

Q: What is the exact location?

A: Vida Studio, Lange Gasse 45, 1080, Vienna.

Q: What is the language of the workshop?

A: English, but on request German is possible.

Q: Is this workshop suitable for kids?

A: Yes, from the age of 12.

Q: Do we need to bring eggs?

A: No, you will be provided with 3 eggs to work on.

Q: Will we use cooked eggs?

A: No, you will work with hollow eggs.

Q: What dyes are used for coloring pysanky?

A: Aniline dyes or acid dyes - same dyes are used for coloring fabric or leather.

Q: Can I buy drinks or food during the workshop?

A: Yes, a bar is available at the venue and food can be ordered from Salonga Peruvian Restaurant Bar. Small snacks will be provided by the host.

Q: I am allergic to beeswax, can I participate?

A: Bees wax will be intensely used during the workshop, it's not recommended for you to participate unfortunately.
